Storage of Onion Bulbs

1. After harvesting bulbs are kept in open space 3 to 4 days under sun for initial drying.
2. The diseased, rotten and damaged bulbs are sorted out.
3. The bulbs are then stored in a cool, dry and ventilated store.
4. This store have several compartments to avoid heaping of bulbs.
5. During storage the bulbs are inspected regularly and the rotten bulbs are removed and disposed off.
6. In this storage loss is about 13 to 16% due to rotting and drying.
7. In cold storage bulbs are stored at 10C to 20C temperature for 7 to 8 month period.
8. In Konkan area bulbs are tied into bundles with their shoots and stored by hanging on bamboo frames.
