Special Weeds in Cropped Areas – Chandwel (Convolvulus arvensis)
Chandwel of Filed Bind Weeds (Convolvulus arvensis):
Deep, rooted petennial weed, country wide trailing herb, reproduced by shallow creeping roots 6-9 cm deep. It does under dormancy in extreme draught having long seed dormancy. Prominent in semi arid region, gardens, cultivable land. Crops like wheat, barley oat, potato, sugarcane. It binds the crops.
Control:
Repeated deep ploughing in summer to expose the roots and rhizomes to Sun. Growing of competitive crops like fodder.
Herbicides:
Phenoxy herbicides are used in winter. 2.4-D three times used at
i) Full tillering
ii) Stiff dough and
iii) After crop harvest when new bind weed plants are 10-5 cm high. After harves, treatment is 0.2 – 0.3% 2.4-D, 2.4,5 – T or Silvex (2:1) are superior. Ester forms of Phenoxy are more effective than salts. Repeated application of 2.4-D and Dicamba (0.5 kg/ha) or pichloram (0.25/kg/ha) at bud stage are effective to eradicate bind weed also trifularalin, Nitralin, Prometryne and 2.4-D, Dicamba.
