Properties and Function of Herbicide – Monuron, Diuron, Linuron and Fenac


At low rates of 1.5 kg/ha used as pre emergence herbicidein sugarcane under limited rainfall.  At higher rates, it is persistant soil sterilents in perennial weeds.  It is an aquatic weedicide.  Leaching is less than Fenuron belongs to substituted area group.

Diuron: Karmex: 3 (3, 4 Dichlorophenyl) – 1 – dimethyl urea:

It is selective herbicide at lower rates and non-selective at higher rates.  Persistancy more than monuron (0.5 to 1 kgha).  It belongs to substituted area group.  Is solid crystalline compound.  Application: Dose: 0.5-100 kg/ha.

It controls Digitaria species (Fox tail), amaranthus sp. (pig weed), Portulaca spp., Ipomeas pp. (Morning glory), Chenopodium album.  Available in Wetable powder, granular and liquid forms.  Used as post-emergence spray with suitable surfactants on young weeds.

Linuron – 3 (3-4 Dichlorophenyl) 1 methoxy – 1 Mcthyl urea:

It is a selective pre – emergene herbicide belonging to urea group used in soyabean, maize, sorghum, wheat.  It is in crystalline state and can be used as post emergence spray on young weeds.  Controls Echmochla crusgalh, Digitaria spp. (Crab grass), Chenopodium album.  Available in wettable powder.

FENAC (2, 3, and 6 Dichlorophenyl acetic acid):

It is a translocated selective herbicide which belongs to phenyl acetic acid group.  It is in solid state.
Dose: 2.5 kg/ha on annual weeds and 10 – 15 kg/kg/ha on perennial weeds.
The chemical is registered for use in sugarcane only.  Control Euphorbia sp., Setarta sp. Digtaria sp., Convolvulus arvensis, and Eluosine sp.  Amaranthus etc.
