Terrace Gardening: A Woman Earns Rs 85000 From Growing Jasmine Flowers
During the Covid 19 pandemic, this advocate in Mangalore was busy planting jasmine on her terrace. A Mangalore advocate, Kirana Devadiga, was busy growing jasmine flowers on her balcony. Despite her profession as an advocate, Kirana has always been a farmer at heart.
When the Pandemic broke out, she didn’t waste any time in buying pots from the roadside sellers and jasmine saplings and seeds from Local Nursery. About 90 Udupi jasmine saplings, pots, and fertilizers were brought. For Rs 12,000, Kirana waited six months to reap a good harvest. Over the past three months, she has earned over Rs 85,000 and expects to double her income in the future.
During a question about how she achieved her dreams despite staunch mockery, Kirana responded with Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam’s quote that “DREAM is not something you see in sleep, DREAM is something that will not let you sleep”.
In addition, she stated that no matter how trivialized the dreams you have might seem in the eyes of others, if you have the will to pursue them you will surely achieve them.
Videos on YouTube and nursery owners were Kirana’s primary teachers, and now her husband and sisters help with all aspects of farming – some of them have even begun growing jasmine themselves. Kirana’s terrace farming techniques allow her to harvest 6 “attes” during the jasmine season. She was paid 1250 rupees for one atte last month. One atte has four chendus. Each chendu has about 800 jasmine buds.
An advocate’s journey is truly an inspiration for everyone and a reminder that it is never too late to fulfill one’s dreams.
